Como muchos ya saben, la muerte se ha llevado a grandes artistas en el 2015. Scott Weiland, vocalista de grupos emblemáticos como Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver y The Wildabouts, así como al genio Lemmy Kilmister, vocalista de Motörhead. El 2016 no ha sido la excepción, ya que el mundo recibió la fatal noticia de la muerte de uno de los grandes artistas de la música del siglo XX, el cual pasó de forma “camaleónica” por diversas etapas y con un carácter innovador en el pop y que, hoy en día, su influencia lo ha catapultado como una deidad en nuestra era moderna. Hoy esta reseña se convierte en un in memoriam al maestro: DAVID BOWIE.
Artista británico y responsable de grandes clásicos como “Heroes”, “Space Oddity”, “Let’s Dance”, “Life On Mars?” o “The Man Who Sold The World”, Bowie supo lidiar entre su pasión por la música y su admirable fuerza por luchar contra el cáncer, hasta que un 10 de enero la mortal enfermedad pudo contra él. Sin embargo, por vaticinios o caprichos del destino dejó un hermoso regalo a sus fanáticos, más que hacia el mismo, por ser su fecha de cumpleaños número 69, convirtiéndose en el disco número 25 de su carrera y último que podremos escuchar.
Bajo el sello discográfico Columbia, “Blackstar” es la última obra del genio londinense lanzado el 8 de enero del presente. En él, Bowie ha plasmado el momento de su vida en que se encontraba, un momento sombrío en el que, incursionando a fondo en el jazz experimental del cual ya había probado en el disco recopilatorio “Nothing Has Changed”, trasmite la introspección y melancolía de un ser que entrega su cuerpo y alma a la música como un espacio único en donde te separas de la caótica realidad.
Precediendo al también aclamado “The Next Day” del 2013, disco que rompió el silencio de una década, esta nueva producción de estrella negra tiene al jazz como principal protagonista en las 7 composiciones que lo conforman, siendo Donny McCaslin, un saxofonista brillante que también toca varios instrumentos de viento de madera el gran privilegiado por aportar su talento a la obra de despedida del conocido “barón blanco”. Prueba de ello es lo que confesó McCaslin el mes pasado a la revista Rolling Stone, en donde dijo: “Yo pensé, ‘Es David Bowie, ¿él me eligió, y él me está enviando un correo electrónico?”. Literalmente este disco fue concebido como un disco de rock grabado por músicos de jazz.
Por otro lado, la producción cayó en mano de Tony Visconti, quien ha acompañado a Bowie desde 1969, el cual tuvo la gentileza de comentar dos grandes referencias que han dado pie a la creación de “Blackstar”. Por un lado, en cuanto a los aspectos musicales, el álbum “To Pimp A Butterfly” del rapero Kendrick Lamar impresionó a David Bowie hasta el punto de querer recoger algo de él para lo que sería su obra final. Por otro, respecto a la idea, la danza final del Cisne Negro de la obra “El Lago De Los Cisnes” de Tchaikovsky, ya que “Blackstar” supone ese salto al vacío que el compositor ruso representaba: una última obra de arte sobre la muerte, antes de que ésta llegue.
Este recorrido hacia la muerte inicia con el tema homónimo al álbum “Blackstar” y primer sencillo promocional de dicha producción discográfica. Con casi diez minutos de duración, es aquí donde diversas atmósferas se combinan en una serie de experimentos sonoros y el jazz, siendo algo tan camaleónico y típico en Bowie. Los arreglos de viento quedan fundidos con la electrónica, mientras que los primeros cuatro minutos están envueltos de una oscuridad inusual, reflejada especialmente en los coros espectrales de las estrofas. Asimismo, la segunda parte es un medio tiempo, de ritmo también constante, en el que se repiten algunas de las partes líricas de la primera, y en el que aparecen instrumentos de cuerda, siempre en la dosis exacta. Aquí se destaca una frase tan filosófica e inspiradora: “Algo ocurrió el día que murió. Su espíritu ascendió un metro y caminó hacia un lado. Alguien ocupó su lugar, y lloró con valor. Soy una estrella negra”, es decir, una metáfora en el que con un cuerpo que ha lucido durante largo tiempo, es en estos momentos que se encuentra cerca de apagarse.
El segundo track llega con “Tis’ A Pity She Was A Whore” (cuyo título hace homenaje a una tragedia del poeta renacentista británico John Ford), en donde los tintes de jazz se vuelven más que evidentes, logrando que el frenético saxofón se fusione con el alterado canto trasmitiendo una fuerza estremecedora que refuerza una atmósfera ya suficientemente cautivadora de por sí.
Uno de los momentos fascinantes del disco llega con “Lazarus”, en el que Bowie destaca por la gran fuerza de voz con la que interpreta a pesar de sus 69 años de edad y en el apuesta por un tema simple de tres acordes y una sutil base rítmica, siendo una combinación agradable y suficiente para convertirse en un clásico de la música del siglo XXI. Sin duda, el rock y el jazz se fusionan dando lugar a un sonido elegante y envolvente, con una carga emocional superior a la de ningún otro tema. El videoclip grabado para este tema refuerza la idea de que este tema es un canto a la vida que existe dentro de la muerte, a la aceptación de la misma y el deseo de vivir.
En seguida suena la rítmica “Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)”. Por una parte es curioso escuchar esta nueva versión, ya que este tema fue grabado anteriormente en verano de 2014, junto a la Orquesta de María Schneider como bonus track del disco recopilatorio de Bowie y en una versión más suave. Es aquí donde se canta a la desesperación mientras se desliza entre arreglos de saxo y una batería constante, que en conjunto, producen una sensación escabrosa mientras la letra mantiene la oscuridad. En este caso, David retrata con precisión literaria un asesinato. El protagonista de la canción le habla a Sue, la mujer a la que ha matado, y a la cual “ha enterrado bajo la mala hierba”.
A mitad de camino, “Girl Loves Me” invade el ambiente con ritmos electrónicos en tensión constante y con una melodía marciana que termina sus frases en una nota aguda. Contribuye en gran medida a la opacidad de la letra que parte de la misma esté escrita en Nadsat, el lenguaje que Anthony Burgress inventó para sus personajes de “La Naranja Mecánica”, y otra parte en Polari, el argot de la subcultura gay británica de los 70 y los 80. Un tema más que raro pero fascinante que no estaría de más ser un ejemplo para quienes quieren ser raperos o incursionar en el hip hop.
Donny McCaslin toma protagonismo en “Dollars Days”, un tema por demás sensual por la buena combinación de piano y saxo que evocan un jazz suave. Aquí, David Bowie parece llevar a cabo una exaltación de los aspectos bellos de la vida, de lo simple por encima del derroche al que lleva una gran posesión de dinero, algo que en el final de una vida queda como algo superfluo. Es difícil aceptar la realidad de la partida de David Bowie. Siendo el que escribe un amante de la música, es imperdonable no conocer a fondo su trayectoria y grandes éxitos de su época dorada. Sin embargo, tuve la ocasión de escuchar y conocer de él a través de su disco “The Next Day”, animándome a descargarlo y conseguir su disco recopilatorio a fin de actualizarme al punto de conocer a una gran maestro de la música de los últimos tiempos.
